OSHKOSH (NBC 26) -- The city of Oshkosh is citing a New York Times article that identified the Oshkosh-Neenah area as sixth in the nation in the rates of rise of COVID-19 cases.
"According to the article, the number of cases in the Oshkosh-Neenah area is doubling every 10 days," the city says in a statement.
The city says the total number of cases in Winnebago County have gone up by more than 200 since May 17th.
"The interesting thing is that it is in the 20-29 year old age group where this increase is the greatest," the city's statement says.
The number of cases in Winnebago County in this age group has gone from 12 to 110 in the same time period. The city says that amounts to 47.2% of the total number of cases in the county, three times as much as any other age group.
“While younger people are less likely to develop significant symptoms, they have to be aware that they can transmit the disease to parents, children, or other vulnerable populations," says City Manager Mark Rohloff.
The city cites contact tracing done by the Winnebago County Health Department, saying the uptick in cases can be partially attributed to a lack of social distancing at large gatherings and bars and restaurants that have opened since the end of “Safer at Home”.
The city continues to encourage people to stay home if sick, socially distance and wear a mask where social distancing might be difficult.
