NEW LONDON (NBC 26) — On the Wolf River in New London, water is starting to creep through the ice.
Neighbors there know what that means.
"I'm pretty concerned about high water," New London resident Karl Kanaman said.
Karl Kanaman has seen water get into his yard and threaten his home for years. Last March was a problem. Then, 2019 brought the wettest year on record. The ground is saturated, and flooding could even worse than years before.
"I just want to keep it out of my garage and stuff like that," Kanaman said. "I've got freezers out there, tools, and lawnmowers and stuff. I just want to keep all that stuff safe."
Tuesday, he joined firefighters and some other New London residents at a flood protection meeting. Officials detailed ways to fill and stack sand bags as an effort to keep water out.
"Having high water all winter, no place for the snow to go, we're concerned," Waupaca County Emergency Management Director Andrew Carlin said. "We're planning for the worst and hoping for the best."
Some of the residents, like Kanaman, said they've never used sand bags before. This year, he will be.
"I think it's time to do something about it," Kanaman said. "I just want to be prepared."
