DE PERE (NBC 26) — The City of De Pere is getting ready to open up their new VFW Aquatic Center.
The new 6,150-square-foot facility will include a lap pool, activity zone, water walk, drop slides, a separate pool with zero depth entry for little ones, and much more.
The city’s recreation supervisor, John McDonald shares what families can expect:
McDonald said this has been about a five-year project from getting the designs to the sub-contractors to much more.
Construction still continues to be underway but they expect to fully open to the public by Saturday, June 12.
“The whole building part of it started last year when we took VFW down in the summer and then they just started the construction process got all the building up before winter so they could work over the winter season. After the winter season kind of dissipated and now we are getting into spring, all the outside fixtures are now able to go up,” McDonald said.
Even with the Covid-19 pandemic, he shares the project stayed on track for the most part and without any delays.
“I’d say 95% of the project was on track, has always stayed on track. And that was something that was a testament to our consultant and the construction company making sure they offer a great product, staying on schedule getting everything done.“, McDonald said.
As for any summer jobs for lifeguards and other positions, McDonald shared they actually started the hiring process last year, even offering an early lifeguard course in the winter.
However, he said you can never have too many lifeguards so if anyone has the certification and looking for a job you are still encouraged to apply.
