GREEN BAY (NBC 26) — New, state-of-the-art air-purification technology is being installed at Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport. A news release from the airport says the NoviSphere PE 254 system eradicates 99.99% of airborne pathogens, including the coronavirus.
GRB will be the first airport in the country with this technology that makes germicidal UV-C light – long used in healthcare facilities – safe for airports, schools, restaurants and other high-traffic public areas. The hope is these devices will help not only for COVID, but for flu season as well.
The airport will have three units, one by the elevators, one by baggage claim and one on the jet bridge to see how it works in a more confined space. Each unit will clean 13,000 cubic feet of air. It’s not intended to clean the entire building; officials strategically placed the devices where they think they'll help the most.
Airport officials plan to order more in the future. Each unit costs about $6,000.
This is part of the airport’s "Flying GRB Means Clean" initiative. Officials are hoping to increase customer confidence at the airport.
