MENASHA, Wis. (NBC 26) — The first day of 2021's sturgeon spearing season, rescue crews said a car that had fallen through the ice on Lake Winnebago.

Lt. Christopher Shea, the Conservation Warden Supervisor with the Lake Winnebago team, said the ice conditions are a little bit thicker compared to last year. However, he wanted to remind everyone there is no such thing as 100 percent safe ice.

“We did have one incident around 7 a.m. this morning where we had a pickup truck go through the ice”, Shea said. “The DNR Wardens, the Neenah-Menasha fire department and the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department responded to that situation. The individual was recovered safely and was brought back to shore.”

Neenah-Menasha Fire Rescue crews recommend checking with local fishing and spearing clubs to find out the latest ice conditions. They also remind drivers to stay on roadways and known driving areas.
