More than 400 Oshkosh-area fourth-graders played instruments they made at concert

OSHKOSH (NBC 26) — More than 400 Oshkosh-area fourth graders put on a unique concert Tuesday with the Oshkosh Youth Symphony.

The students played instruments that they built themselves. It's all part of a project that combines science with arts and music called Full STEAM Ahead, which is designed to promote hands-on learning.

Full STEAM Ahead is an arts integration Unit of study for the fourth-grade classrooms. In a collaboration between the Oshkosh Youth Symphony, Inc., the Oshkosh Area School District, and surrounding Districts, students learn about the science of sound and make connections to music, engineering, science, and literacy through the course of the unit.

A musical connection and theme are set each year in collaboration with the Oshkosh Youth Symphony, Inc. and align with their annual Fall Children's Concert 'Full STEAM Ahead'. Students in both the Oshkosh Youth Symphony, Inc. and the school districts, share their progress in music appreciation through The Full STEAM Ahead Unit's videos, Flip Grids, and through the students designing, building, and playing their own instrument.

In a culminating musical performance, the Oshkosh Youth Symphony, Inc. Music Director, Yukiko Grine, leads the students in playing a section of the performance along with the orchestra using the instruments they created.
