FOND DU LAC COUNTY, Wis. (NBC 26) - A man is in custody after a standoff involving a baby.
Around 6:30 Tuesday night, a Fond du Lac County Sheriff's deputy attempted to stop a vehicle for speeding on USH 151 SB near STH 23. The driver failed to stop and a high speed chase ensued, through the city of Fond du Lac and south on rural highways.
During the chase, the suspect attempted to hit a sheriff's squad. The deputy utilized trained techniques to end the pursuit south of STH 49 in Dodge County. The vehicle slid into a ditch and the driver armed himself with a butcher knife. Police were able to see a female passenger inside the vehicle, and they formed a perimeter and began negotiating with the suspect.
The suspect then pulled a baby from the back seat of the vehicle and held the child in front of him, still armed with the butcher knife.
The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office SWAT/Rescue and Negotiations Teams were deployed to the scene and spent several hours negotiating with the suspect. Around 10:15pm, they convinced the suspect to step out of the vehicle and he was taken into custody without further incident.
The woman and her baby were escorted from the vehicle unharmed. No one involved in the incident was hurt.
The 34-year-old suspect from the Green Bay area will be referred to the District Attorney’s Office for numerous charges upon completion of the interviews and investigation.
