GREEN BAY (NBC 26) — One local veterinarian reported seeing an increase in pets who are getting into Halloween decorations and candy. She offers several suggestions for your pet's safety.
Dr. Becky Krull with the Green Bay and Allouez Animal Hospital said more cats and dogs are getting sick from eating candy and decorations this year.
The Animal Hospital said one family who was "Boo'ed" found their dog had eaten a basket of candy and toys that was left on their porch. In one instance, a cat had eaten a string of spider web.
Dr. Krull said the reason for this increase in cases is because a lot of people adopted young animals during the pandemic. Most of these adopters are new pet owners who aren't aware of the dangers decorations can pose. Additionally, more people, especially kids, are home and leaving items out in places their pets can easily reach.
Here are several suggestions from Dr. Krull to keep your pets safe this holiday:
- Do not leave items on porches
- Remind kids not to leave candy out
- Keep an eye on your decorations as animals think they are toys
