GREEN BAY (NBC 26) — State legislators representing the Green Bay area have introduced new legislation to name a bridge in Green Bay after Packers legend Bart Starr.

The legislation would designate and mark the Walnut Street Bridge in Green Bay as the Bart Starr Memorial Bridge. Representatives Steffen, Macco, Shelton and Senator Wimberger introduced the legislation this past week.

“What a fitting tribute to a man who was a great example both on and off the field. Bart Starr was truly someone to look up to and model yourself after and I am proud to be part of recognizing his legacy and influence he had throughout the City of Green Bay and the state of Wisconsin,” said Representative Steffen (R-Howard), lead author of the legislation.

Bart Starr, the Green Bay Packers quarterback and catalyst of Vince Lombardi's powerhouse teams of the 1960s, passed away in May 2019 at the age of 85.

There had been previous discussions to re-name Walnut Street Bridge after Starr. Similar legislation was introduced last legislative session, but according to Representative Steffen's office, it was introduced by a different office and was introduced near the end of the session. Many legislative initiatives ended after the pandemic began in early 2020.
