APPLETON (NBC 26) — It started out as “just something to do” for Gavin Wiese, 13, and Macy Hartjes, 14.
“It's helping everyone in the community," said Hartjes. "And it's just a nice thing to do to help out.”
Three years ago, they donated a few boxes to St. Joseph’s Food Program. Last year, the two collected 4,800 donations for the Salvation Army. This year, their goal is 5,500 cans and non-perishable items.
“I feel like we're able to beat our goal because we already have a lot of items right now," said Wiese.
With the help of family and friends, the kids put out 13 donation drop off boxes all over the area. They’re also taking monetary donations and buying items from the grocery store.
“Yesterday when we went shopping, random people come up to us and say, ‘Oh, I love what you're doing,'" said Hartjes. "'I know it's for a good cause.’”
Wiese and Hartjes have already loaded multiple St. Joe’s trucks, and they still have two weeks left of their food drive.
“It makes me feel good because I know that people don't have as much as we do," said Wiese. "And it makes me feel good that I can help them and give back to them.”
Monetary donations, including cash and checks, can be mailed or dropped off at 3948 N Rose Meadow Lane in Appleton.
