GREEN BAY (NBC 26) — Preparations for the growing season were underway Thursday morning in the garden at Lincoln Elementary School, 105 S. Buchanan St., Green Bay.
During the Mini Garden Blitz, Lincoln Elementary students, staff and parents filled up their garden beds with new soil with help from New Leaf Garden Blitz volunteers. The Garden Blitz planning team raised money to purchase the new garden soil from Willems Landscape Service.
This year, Lincoln Elementary also enhanced their garden area by making it wheelchair accessible.
New Leaf Garden Blitz volunteers will build and install over 75 raised bed gardens throughout the community in 2021, specifically focusing on installing gardens for organizations that empower Black and Indigenous communities, as well as people living with disabilities.
The New Leaf Garden Blitz provides a comprehensive approach to urban agriculture by selling and installing raised bed gardens and providing education and mentorship for new gardeners. The garden boxes are built, installed and filled with soil over the course of one weekend by a team of volunteers.
