BELLEVUE, Wis. (NBC 26) -- Even though we are in the thick of winter here in Wisconsin, one area garden center is preparing for spring planting.
Larry's Bellevue Gardens is hard at work inside their greenhouse.
"Start thinking about your pots. Start making a list," said Vicki Rabas, one of the owners of Larry's Bellevue Gardens. "What do you want to pick up this year?"
Staff at Larry's Bellevue Garden is doing the leg work for you getting those plants started.
"Most of the stuff we do right now is annuals," said Larry Rabas, another owner of Larry's Bellevue Garden. "We get our perennials coming in in March and we get those in a small plug."
They have the perfect environment for plants to flourish in the middle of winter. Larry says it's all about timing.
"Some of the stuff needs more time to be in a pot and gorwing to flower at the right time," said Larry Rabas.
Larry's has been in business for 28 years and their experience is evident as you look at the array of baby plants starting to sprout inside their greenhouse.
"One day there is nothing in the tray. The next day you have a bunch of little plants there popping up," said Larry Rabas. "It's a fun time of year."
"It's the pride in seeing what you selected grow," said Vicki Rabas.
Vicki says they saw an uptick in folks wanting to plant flowers and grow their own gardens last year in part due to the pandemic.
"People were home and they wanted family activities for the summer," said Vicki Rabas. "There was a lot more home gardeners. They got their families involved."
They expect that trend to continue.
It's easy to see gardening your own veggies comes with all kinds of benefits. It's healthy and tasty.
"Eating your own home grown vegetables, you can't beat it," said Vicki Rabas.
Start thinking about what you want to plant this spring.
"All of our stuff is locally grown here," said Larry Rabas. "We do 99% of our stuff ourselves. A lot of our customers know that and like the fact that it is grown here locally."
Larry's Bellevue Gardens will announce their opening date on their Facebook page and website as we get closer to Easter.
