GREEN BAY (NBC 26) — Through its Hometown Strong initiative, JBS USA donated 25.6 acres of land and $500,000 million to help Green Bay respond to needs resulting from the coronavirus pandemic and invest in the community’s future.
JBS executives presented the deed and check to Green Bay during a Friday morning ceremony on the city's east side.
"It's a pretty unique situation we're in to be able to take ownership of 26.5 acres of green field, that's really ripe for redevelopment," said Mayor Eric Genrich. "So we're planning to do here is incorporate some housing of different income types, different configurations, as well as a destination playground and some community gardens or an urban farm."
JBS USA Statement: “We are proud to partner with the City of Green Bay and support this important community development project through our JBS Hometown Strong initiative. We believe it will have a meaningful and lasting impact for the Green Bay community – our team members, their families and our neighbors. The multi-faceted approach that includes housing, a park, a community garden and outdoor gathering space will improve and strengthen this region for individuals and families to enjoy.”
Green Bay Mayor Eric Genrich Statement: “This once-in-a-generation type of investment is an exciting moment for the City of Green Bay. At a time when expanding housing opportunities for the residents of our city is a top concern, this type of gift moves us in the right direction. I am thankful that here in Green Bay we can partner with our corporate, community-based, non-profit and local leaders to build a long-lasting positive impact for the city.”
Last April, JBS was in the news due to a major COVID-19 outbreak which caused the plan to temporarily close.
