TWO RIVERS (NBC 26) — The community of Two Rivers is trying to come together after a 10th-grade boy suffered a medical emergency in the pool at Two Rivers High School and later died.

Paramedics responded to the school's emergency call around 2 p.m. Tuesday and transported the student to the hospital where he passed away, according to a letter the school district sent to families Tuesday night.

Two Rivers residents and city leaders told NBC 26 they're saddened to hear about the loss of one of the kids in their own community.
"I think it goes right to the heart of every household in this community. It's tough news," said Greg Buckley, Two Rivers city manager. "There's no words to express the grief that is being felt."

Others said it's an unimaginable situation.

"I was absolutely heartbroken," said Adam Wachowski, Two Rivers city council president. "Having kids of my own, it was just devastating knowing that you just sent your child to school, and all of a sudden your child didn't come home. Absolutely heartbreaking."

Wachowski said grief can have a far reach in a tight-knit community.

"If it affects one person, it pretty much affects the community as a whole, because we are so close," Wachowski said. "And losing one of your own, especially one that's in high school, is absolutely devastating."

The district canceled classes Wednesday at the high school. Counselors and school staff were on hand throughout the day. The district also has a crisis intervention team made up of professionals trained to help students, parents, and faculty during these types of difficult situations.
