WISCONSIN (NBC 26) — The first full weekend of the sturgeon spearing season is officially in the books.
But for many, it's not just a hobby but a family tradition.
For Stephanie Kramer of Fond du Lac it’s a weekend she'll never forget. She speared a sturgeon and she spent time with her family.
"It couldn't have come out any more perfect. We all saw the whole thing come down and it was incredible,” Kramer said.
Sturgeon spearing has been her favorite sport since she was 14-year-old. This year, it was the first time all her loved ones were together in the same ice shanty.
"This is what my mom and dad did when they dated,” Kramer said. “They raised us to do this with them so to have us all in the same shack to do it, I can't even put words into it."
Meanwhile, ten-year-old Ayden Nummerdor used this weekend to help promote the business he started with his grandfather. He sells tools essential for spearers.
"Tying tool for when you spear a fish so you remove your ties out in the fish,” Nummerdor said.
While Ayden and his grandfather didn't spear anything for Kramer, it's a weekend she'll never forget.
"So many laughs, happy tears and let me tell ya a lot of beers,” Kramer said.
The season goes until February 26, however, things could end early if sturgeon cap numbers are reached.
