One person is in the hospital after a shooting incident Wednesday night. Chief Chris Davis briefed the media on the situation at a press conference Thursday afternoon, in response to what police are calling an officer involved shooting.
Chief Davis said at around 11:15 Wednesday night, police were called to the scene for a report of a domestic disturbance. The suspect left the apartment complex in a car and returned to the scene at least three times before police intervened.
NBC 26 spoke to witnesses who said they heard a man running around allegedly shooting a gun in the air.
When the suspect returned for a third time, police said they believed the person may have fired shots from a handgun out of the car. Three officers fired back and the suspect was shot and surrendered. The suspect was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Officers said they recovered a handgun from the suspect's car.
As for why it took so long for officers to negotiate, Chief Davis said it's a tough judgment call.
"We train our officers to constantly evaluate risk... and number two, to have an objective for whatever it is that they're doing, and you weigh that risk against that objective," Chief Davis said.
Police say there is no ongoing threat to the community.
Green Bay Police officers responded to the 700. block of Chapel View Rd. just after 11 p.m. for a report of a disturbance involving two people. On the scene, officers found a person they describe as "distraught", who tried to flee the scene.
During the incident, shots were fired, and one person was injured. That person was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
No officers were hurt in the incident.
Other local law enforcement assisted the Green Bay Police Department at the scene.
