GREEN BAY, Wis. (NBC 26) -- As the temperatures drop and cold weather moves in, the number of people in need goes up.

St. John the Evangelist Homeless Shelter has seen an increase in people coming to its shelter since the weather got colder and expect the number will continue to climb. Alexia Wood, the executive director, said there are many ways people can help.

One is buy donating household items like paper products and shampoo. Warm layers, winter coats, boots, and other winter gear are also important items right now. Wood said sometimes people come to the shelter without a jacket or one that isn't warm enough for the winter. They provide winter gear when needed.

"We're trying to get them, you know, weeks worth of clothes to get them from laundry day to laundry day. We're looking to help them bundle up and put on those layers and the long underwear and the hats and the gloves," added Wood.

She said there are also opportunities to work or volunteer at the shelter.
