GREEN BAY — Animal experts are reminding pet owners about keeping their animals safe during the Fourth of July.

Experts say, fireworks can scare your pets, which can lead to unintended stress on your furry pal.

There are a couple stress signals you can look out for with dogs, like yawning, sneezing, and heavy panting. With cats, they may hide, excessively lick, bite, and even avoid using the litter box.

Of course, there are ways to avoid this behavior.

"We recommend keeping them at home, windows shut, maybe play some music that they are familiar with or normally listen to,” says Shaina Allen, the Marketing Coordinator of Wisconsin Humane Society. “keep the air conditioning on so they are cool. As calm as possible and just try to minimize the stress that comes with loud noises."

Another note for the summer: don't leave your pets in the car for more than 20 minutes. The summer heat can cause real harm to your pet.
