HOBART, Wis. (NBC 26) — It's a day when thousands of Northeast Wisconsinites play pretend.

"I think it's most exciting dressing up and being somebody else," Tatum Wentland in Hobart said.

It's a day others spend making new friends.

"I like being out in the community and meeting all the neighbors," Jillian Wentland said.

Another Halloween is in the books. And for local kids like Summer Stockfisch , this year's night of trick-or-treating felt a little more special.

"We don't have to wear masks as much anymore and we can talk to other people and go out into the community and just hang out and have fun," she said.

Hundreds of families took to the neighborhoods of Hobart, knocking on doors with three words: trick-or-treat.

"You get to come together with your friends and your family and you get to go and just hang out with them and get candy," Stockfisch said.

The Hobart Fire Department put its own twist on trick-or-treating, handing out not only candy, but also replica fire helmets.

"We like to park out in the major intersections out here in the village," Fire LLC Lead Instructor Luke Van Noie said. "We get to see the kids. We get to hand out candy. It's a lot of fun. We really enjoy it."

Hobart Fire has maintained the tradition for at least 15 years.

"[We] show the kids the fire truck and [let] them blow the horn a couple times," Van Noie said.

Whether you're trying to get a free helmet or a bag full of candy, some locals say you have to look the part on Halloween.

"You get to dress up and not just go," Tatum Wentland said. "If you really want candy, you want a costume."
