SEVASTOPOL (NBC 26) — The Door County Sheriff's Office is investigating a vehicle-pedestrian hit-and-run that occurred Saturday night, which lead to the pedestrian's death.

Officers responded to a vehicle-pedestrian crash on CTH BB, west of Old Highway Road where it was discovered that a 71-year-old woman from Sturgeon Bay had been struck by a 2013 Ford Escape SUV.

"We are a tight-knit community in Door County, and it affects everybody," Captain Carl Waterstreet said.

In a statement from the Door County Sheriff's Office Facebook Page, after striking the woman, the SUV continued westbound on CTH BB, crossed the eastbound lane, and entered the south ditch. After becoming entangled in a fence, the driver fled the scene on foot.

Officers were able to take a 43-year-old Sturgeon Bay male suspect into custody.

He made his initial appearance in court on Monday, and is now facing a $500,000 cash bond. The suspect has not yet been charged, but Waterstreet says names will be released Tuesday.

The Sheriff's Office reports that live-saving measures were administered to the crash victim, but she was pronounced deceased after being transported to the Door County Medical Center.

As a result of the crash, CTH BB was closed for six hours while the Wisconsin State Patrol Crash Reconstruction Unit conducted preliminary investigations.

"We tend to involve ourselves heavily with everybody in Door County," Waterstreet said. "So when there's a tragedy like this, it affects us also."

The crash still remains under investigation.
