GREEN BAY, Wis. (NBC 26) -- As the coronavirus and flu virus continue to keep people on high alert, some local stores have noticed people taking action.
We talked with several stores who said they are sold out of medical face masks.
Marci Smith is an infection preventionist at Prevea Health. She said she thinks it's a good thing people are taking it upon themselves to protect both themselves and others.
"The person wearing the mask, it protects because what it's doing is essentially creating a barrier between what you're expelling out of your nose or you mouth and what you are being exposed to in the environment or other people's, you know, secretions," added Smith.
When patients come to one of their locations, Smith said they are screened for a cough, fever, and travel. If they have a cough, they're asked to wear a mask during the appointment. Masks are available to all patients.
Smith also said the coronavirus and influenza spread the same way, so it's important to do things like keep your hands clean and cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze.
