STURGEON BAY (NBC 26) -- Door County Habitat for Humanity said in a news release Thursday that it has partnered up with the owners of American Petroleum to build and stock additional free food pantries throughout Sturgeon Bay.
The goal is to help address the food insecurity caused by the coronavirus layoffs.
Habitat for Humanity said this effort started with the organization putting out a pantry at the start of the shutdowns, although they now plan to keep the pantry permanently outside the ReStore.
Himanshu Goel and Theresa Enigl, owners of American Petroleum, started stocking the pantries and realized that there were none on the west side of Sturgeon Bay.
According to Habitat, after an effort from volunteers, pantries are now installed at Bayview Lutheran Church, Corpus Christi Catholic Church, and St. Peter’s Lutheran Church. If other people or organizations want to host a free pantry, the ReStore is willing to contribute materials for that purpose.
Habitat for Humanity also said Theresa and Himanshu are also putting together a map of all the pantries to help people find these resources.
