GREEN BAY (NBC 26) — East High School was briefly put under a "secure the building" for an inside situation on Monday after a handgun was found in a locker, according to school officials.
According to a statement from Green Bay Area Public School District, it happened late Monday morning. East High School administration noticed that a student did not enter a secure door, but rather was let in by another student.
According to Green Bay Police, school staff notified a School Resource Officer (SRO) of a potential weapon located in the jacket of a student. The jacket was in a school locker. Police said school staff provided the SRO with the jacket and a handgun was discovered in the jacket pocket.
The school was briefly placed in secure the building for an inside situation.
Green Bay Police said several students were taken to the police department and questioned regarding their involvement in this incident. Once detectives interviewed the students, it was determined that two would be referred to the District Attorney for charges related to bringing a firearm into a school. Both students were placed in secure detention per juvenile authorities. Police said there is no indication that the students had planned on using the firearm.
The Green Bay Area Public School District is reviewing additional security measures Monday.
