GREEN BAY (NBC 26) — The Grounded Cafe in Green Bay is more than just a great place to get a good cup of coffee and some food. It's a place breaking down stereotypes of "disability" and "seniors."
"Grounded Cafe exists as a training site for adults with disabilities who are eager to find paid employment," said Chanda Foley, a co-leader of the cafe for ADRC of Brown County. "So what we do is we give them all of the restaurant and skill sets that they need, and then we help them. We help them find a position that works for them. They teach us as much as we teach them."
Because of their work, the nonprofit was chosen as one of the recipients for this year's Give Big Green Bay event. It's their second time a part of the event; and while they're excited for the help, they're also excited to show the community what they can do.
"I love that the cafe is for all people of abilities and disabilities," said Lucas Schmechel, a cafe ambassador. "It really shows we are capable of doing any kind of job. I love working at the cafe and everyone there accepts me for what I am."
Aside from donating to them through Give Big Green Bay, Foley said they just installed a walk-up window. They're encouraging people to stop by once the weather is a little nicer so they can see more people's faces.
