GREEN BAY (NBC 26) — In her 15 years of teaching, last year was one of the toughest for Holly Moser, kindergarten teacher at MacArthur Elementary School.

“Teaching kindergarten through the screen last year, it was tricky," she said. "We did it, we survived, we met that challenge head on and we did it."

Planning lessons around social distancing and mask requirements was a bit of a challenge, said Roger Drumm, fourth grade teacher.

“Just rethinking like, 'Okay can I do that,' or, 'How are the kids going to react to it,' and just making sure that we're following protocols," he said. "And just making sure we're really safe. That's the main thing, keep the kids safe.”

Seeing how well the students handled everything in the spring, there’s not a whole lot to worry about, said Drumm.

"There are always nerves before the year, no matter how long I've been teaching I've had those beginning of the year jitters," he said. "But once the kids are here, things just kind of go away.”

Moser's biggest piece of advice for nervous parents: just take a deep breath.

“It's okay," she said. "We all are human, we all know that last year was challenging. We all know that this year there's going to be bumps along the way, but together, parents teachers working together, we're going to get there, and the kids are going to do great. So just keep breathing, take those breaths, and we'll work through it together.”

Children are required to wear masks on all school buses, per the CDC's order. School districts requiring masks include Appleton, Kimberly, Manitowoc, Neenah and Oshkosh. Most of these districts requiring masks will be constantly re-evaluating throughout these next few weeks.
