GREEN BAY (NBC 26) — Green Bay Police said an additional arrest has been made in Oconto County of a person of interest believed to be connected to a shooting on Smith Street last month, which is now a homicide investigation. A 42-year-old Green Bay man who had suffered life-threatening injuries has died.
According to a statement from police, since the shooting, police have been seeking to speak with a 24-year-old Green Bay area man. On Wednesday, shortly after 10:00 a.m., officers witnessed a person fleeing into a home on the 1300 block of Smith Street who may have had connections to the incident on December 20. Police applied for and were granted a search warrant for the residence.
Police said they evacuated the home, but one person refused to leave. Police said the Crisis Negotiation Team used basic negotiation techniques, which were unsuccessful. SWAT on the scene used verbal commands, noise flash diversionary devices, and less lethal chemical agents to get the person inside to peacefully surrender, which police said occurred just before 2:30 p.m. This is when a 33-year-old man Neopit, Wisconsin man, who currently has an unknown relationship to the residence, was taken into custody on multiple warrants.
While on the scene, Green Bay Police had discovered that the person of interest, which is the 24-year-old Green Bay area man, was instead believed to be at a residence in Oconto County. Different law enforcement agencies worked together to bring the man into custody. Police said he was taken into custody at a home on the 300 block of Pecor Street in Oconto. Green Bay Police have questioned and jailed this person of interest on a warrant.
Police aren't releasing the name of the man who died in the December shooting, per the request of his family. The two other men who had non-life-threatening injuries in the shooting, a 23-year-old Green Bay man and a 41-year-old Peoria, Illinois man have been released from local hospitals and remain jailed on various charges. The investigation is ongoing.
