GREEN BAY, Wis. (NBC26) -- On Sunday morning, MD Lovelace was driving down West Walnut Street to visit his dad a few blocks from where he witnessed the incident.
"I was kind of coming down the road and all of a sudden, a stream of squad cars came through and they pulled a pit maneuver on the vehicle at hand," Lovelace, a shooting witness, said. "I thought I heard a couple shots. I've heard people say as many as ten. I heard maybe three."
Green Bay police confirm officers engaged in a vehicle pursuit with a male suspect wanted for multiple crimes at 11 A.M. They eventually forced the fleeing car to a stop near South Maple Avenue and West Walnut Street.
"Following that pit maneuver, officers then encountered a male suspect with a gun," Green Bay police commander Kevin Warych said. "That male suspect shot at the officers who then returned fire."
Green Bay police say they brought in armored vehicles and crisis negotiators to surround the man. There was a standoff between police and the shooter for nearly four hours.
"Three officers were involved in this shooting," Warych said. "No one was hurt including the officers and the suspect."
Police say the man in question eventually turned himself over to authorities.
"Over an extended period of time, they were able to convince that male to exit the vehicle and safely surrender for everybody's safety," Warych said.
Witnesses like Lovelace say they don't expect crimes like this happen in Green Bay.
"You're kind of listening to everything happen and trying to figure out what the heck just happened around you," Lovelace said. "It's kind of an odd [unlike] everyday situation."
But Green Bay police want to make sure the community is comfortable after the rare event.
"One incident does not define a neighborhood," Warych said. "One incident does not define a city. And when people commit acts, our job is to hold people accountable."
The name of the suspect and the crimes he committed have not yet been released by the Green Bay Police Department.
