GREEN BAY (NBC 26) — The Green Bay Police Department commemorated Peace Officers Memorial Day and National Police Week Thursday afternoon.
The ceremony was held to honor all local, state and federal peace officers who have died in the line of duty.
"In 2021 as of about 5 minutes ago, the numbers were up to 124 officers who’ve already lost their lives in the line of duty," said Lt. Brad Strouf, Green Bay Police Department chief of staff. "So, we’re over an officer losing their life a day right now and those numbers are troubling and unsettling, and that’s just one of the reasons we’re honoring those officers who continue to give their all."
In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed into law that every May 15th will be Peace Officers Memorial Day. The week of May 15th is established as National Police Week to pay tribute to the law enforcement officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country and voice appreciation for all those currently serving.
"It’s a somber moment for us to remember those of us who have gone before us and have given the ultimate sacrifice," Strouf said.
