GREEN BAY (NBC 26) — Two people were injured due to a Thursday fire at a Green Bay home, according to Green Bay firefighters. One person was treated and released on scene and one was taken to a local hospital for treatment. There were no firefighter injuries.

The local Red Cross said it's assisting four adults and five children who were displaced by the major fire on South Broadway. The fire was reported at 1100 block of South Broadway Street on Green Bay's west side late Thursday morning at around 11:08 a.m.

When firefighters arrived, crews found what they describe as "heavy fire conditions," with smoke and flames showing from the street side of the home. The fire quickly gained control of the entire house and fire companies were forced to take a defensive posture to control the fire.

Green Bay resident Pat Paape lives down the street from where the fire occurred. When she heard about the fire, she says she walked outside to see the house engulfed in flames.

"My husband was outside with a friend and he came and said there’s a house burning down the block and I walked out and I saw flames everywhere,” Paape said. "I thought the whole house was going to be gone.”

Firefighters said it took about 50 minutes to get the fire under control.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the GBMFD Fire Marshal's Office at this time, with an estimated dollar loss of approximately $80,000. The house is considered a total loss.

The fire prompted police to ask drivers to avoid the area during the fire. South Broadway is now back open.
