MARINETTE COUNTY (NBC 26) — A Green Bay man drowned Saturday while on the Peshtigo River, the Marinette County Sheriff said Sunday.

The Sheriff said in a news release that dispatch received a 911 call on Saturday around 3:41 p.m. from witnesses who said a man they were tubing with had disappeared underwater. It happened on the Peshtigo River downstream from Don Brooks Park in the Village of Crivitz.

According to the news release, emergency crews searched for the man, but the rescue effort became a recovery effort when his body was found. The Sheriff said the victim's body was recovered with a river drag device deployed from a watercraft operated by a DNR conservation warden.

The victim's body was brought to shore and authorities pronounced him dead at 6:05 p.m.

The victim was identified as 40-year-old Anthony L. Rodgers from Green Bay. While the investigation is ongoing, the Sheriff's statement said contributing factors may have included that he wasn't wearing a personal flotation device and that he may not have had strong swimming skills.

An autopsy is scheduled for Monday to determine the primary causal factor in the death and to investigate if any other contributing factors existed.
