GREEN BAY (NBC 26) -- The cities of Green Bay and De Pere are officially recommending against trick-or-treating this year, but official trick-or-treating hours have not been canceled.

In a joint statement posted online, the cities' recommendation against trick-or-treating door to door this year is due to concerns about rising COVID-19 numbers in the state.

The cities recommend "safer" options such as virtual events or in-home Halloween-themed activities like baking treats, decorating, watching holiday movies, or scavenger hunts. Drive through haunted house or neighborhood decoration viewing was another recommendation.

Green Bay and De Pere also advise against in-person socializing events such as going to bars or parties.

Even with these recommendations, the cities understand many people will still trick-or-treat anyway. Therefore, official trick-or-treat hours are set for Saturday, Oct. 31 from 4 to 7 p.m. For traffic safety reasons, and out of courtesy to local homeowners, the public is asked to adhere to this time frame.

The cities recommend visiting halloween2020.org to learn more about having a safe Halloween this year.
