GREEN BAY (NBC 26) — There are several efforts going on in the Green Bay area community to help people in Ukraine as Russia continues its attack on the country.
Souper Day Green Bay is offering Ukrainian soups with all proceeds going toward a global relief fund.
Julie Baranek, owner of the new eatery, which is located inside the Revolution Market, 2160 Holmgren Way, said she wanted to find a way to support Ukrainian humanitarian efforts.
"I thought, "well, I make soup!" So I started researching Ukrainian soups and I found some really neat, interesting recipes that I would have never thought of to make myself," Baranek said.
Earlier this week, Baranek made and sold a Ukrainian mushroom soup. A Ukrainian spinach soup is currently available for purchase as part of the six hot soups offered daily. Once that runs out, a Ukrainian chicken soup will be available.
"I think we all feel really bad for the Ukrainian people right now and what they have to go through," Baranek said. "It just pulls at our heart strings and I think we want to do something."
Uncle Mike's Bake Shoppe plans to support the Ukrainian Red Cross with the sale of pies and a special Ukraine Kringle, which features a blueberry filling and lemon icing. The bakery will donate $3.14 for every pie and Ukraine Kringle sold from March 11-14.
"Giving back to the community has really always been very important to us," said Brittni Vandewalle, Mike's Bake Shoppe owner. "My dad - that was one of his number one things to do when we had the bakery that he really wanted to give back to the community. And obviously right now people are really in need in Ukraine. So when there's a need, a disaster of any sort, we really like to step up and do the best we can."
Notre Dame Academy is holding a Ukrainian Help Drive through March 25. The school is collecting clothing, diapers, medical supplies, hygiene items, dry foods, sleeping bags, blankets and outerwear. Monetary donations can be made at the school or online.
All donated items will be collected by a Ukrainian-American volunteer who will drive them to Chicago. The Ukrainian Postal Service will fly the donations to Poland, which will end up in Lviv, Ukraine.
