MANITOWOC COUNTY (NBC 26) — A Manitowoc County man rescued a woman from a vehicle fire early Tuesday morning, the Manitowoc County Sheriff said.
It happened on Highway 42, north of Irish Road, in the town of Two Creeks.
A statement from the sheriff's office said a 21-year-old Kewaunee County woman was traveling northbound on Highway 42 in the early morning hours Tuesday. The sheriff's statement said the SUV left the roadway and entered the east ditch, where it hit a culvert and went airborne. The SUV caught fire after colliding with a nearby barn.
Shortly after hearing the crash, the sheriff's office said a 41-year-old Manitowoc County man ran toward the crash site, unbuckled the driver's seatbelt, and removed the driver from the burning SUV. The sheriff's office said the man's actions prevented further injury.
Firefighters were able to put out the vehicle fire, which had been completely engulfed in flames. The fire had also spread to the barn, but firefighters were able to extinguish it. No other people nor animals were hurt in the crash.
The driver was taken to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. The sheriff's office said the driver was later charged with first offense OWI.
