GREEN BAY (NBC 26) — After using it for more than a century, Georgia-Pacific will stop burning coal at its Green Bay Broadway mill next Monday.

They are converting over to natural gas at the facility. The company invested nearly $27 million to make the switch. A spokesperson for the mill says it's a big step forward.

"This helps us improve a lot of things. Obviously, the environmental footprint, but also safety because a lot of that equipment was old and plus, we have more room for future investments here in the facility,” said Mike Kawleski, the Public Affairs Manager for Georgia-Pacific - Green Bay Operations.

Last year, Georgia-Pacific took down one of its two 400-foot-tall smokestacks. The other stack is scheduled to be removed in 2021.
