ASHWAUBENON (NBC 26) — Heading into Super Bowl weekend, many people are planning to have watching parties, and what's the best part of those parties? The food. From wings to nachos, or a homemade dip, the USDA is reminding football fans everywhere to follow safe food handling rules during the big game. Whether you’re a seasoned cook or more of a rookie when it comes to the kitchen, here are the big tips to keep in mind:

  • Wash hands effectively
  • Do not wash raw poultry
  • Use a food thermometer
  • Follow the four steps to food safety
  • Be safe with takeout food
  • Store leftovers properly (the 2-hour rule)

And remember the fundamental steps: clean, separate, cook and chill. Listen to our interview with USDA expert Meredith Carothers from the DMV to hear her explain what each of those steps entail.

You can watch Super Bowl 56 on NBC 26 on Sunday, February 13, at 5:30n p.m.
