FOND DU LAC (NBC 26) — Firefighters responded to a house fire believed to be caused by lighting illegal fireworks on a roof.

Fond du Lac Fire/Rescue (FDLFR) crews said the fire happened on the 400 block of W. Scott Street around 1 p.m. Saturday.

According to witnesses, smoke was coming from the roof of a two story, single family home. Reports said it is believed fireworks were being shot off the roof, which caused the small fire to start.

Firefighters said the damage was minor and did not extend into the attic space.

Fond du Lac officers said they checked the area and did not find anyone using fireworks.

The FDLFR reminds everyone not only are fireworks illegal, but they are very dangerous during dry weather and windy conditions.

“Embers from a simple bottle rocket are enough to ignite a house or dry vegetation” said Fire Chief Peter O’Leary.

FDLFR said this call was one of of three simultaneous fire department responses. The other two were for a transformer fire and a person stuck in an elevator.
