FOND DU LAC (NBC 26) -- Fond Du Lac Fire Rescue personnel are getting a new layer of protection.
The department has added new powered air purifying respirators to its personal protective equipment.
The gear is to be used in situations where harmful particulates, including the COVID virus, can put their first responders at risk.
"It was a step in a different direction for us, but it seemed to be the most logical way to provide that additional level of protection. And if it works in a hospital, why can't we use it out in the field?" explained Todd Janquart, Asst. Chief of Ems For Fond Du Lac Fire
The respirators were purchased with money from the COVID-relief, or cares act, that was passed earlier this year.
