FOND DU LAC COUNTY (NBC 26) — Community members of Fond du Lac County are offering condolences after the Fond du Lac County Executive Allen J. Buechel passed away Sunday afternoon. The county sheriff said Buechel died unexpectedly.
"He was a true public servant who loved his family, the citizens he served, and who was a friend and advocate of the Sheriff's Office and public safety in our county. He will be greatly missed by many," Sheriff Ryan F. Waldschmidt wrote in a statement on Facebook.
A statement from Outagamie County Executive, Tom Nelson, called Buechel the longest-serving county executive in Wisconsin.
"Fond du Lac has consistently been one of the best-run counties in the state--and it was no coincidence that Al was at the helm," Nelson said in a statement.
Fond du Lac County 911 Dispatch called Buechel an "amazing man," saying that he worked hard to establish a county-wide public safety dispatch center.
According to the Fond du Lac County website, Allen Buechel has served as Fond du Lac County Executive since 1993 after serving on the Fond du Lac County Board for 17 years. Buechel worked in sales management for 22 years prior to his first election to the County Executive position.
Buechel was 74 years old.
