FOND DU LAC (NBC 26) — Fond Du Lac is saying goodbye to a member of its police department.

Today is the final visitation for 26-year-old Officer Joseph Kurer. He died last week from complications related to COVID. Governor Evers has ordered all flags to be flown at half-staff in Officer Kurer's honor.

Kurer was sworn in as a Fond du Lac Police officer in August 2018 and was also a sergeant with the Wisconsin Army National Guard.

With the Fond du Lac Police Department, Kurer was a member of the tactical field force team, honor guard unit, domestic violence intervention team, and served as a field training officer.

Kurer was awarded a City of Fond du Lac Police Department life-saving award, Army commendation medal, Army achievement medal, and Air Force Sergeants Association NCO of the year as a cadet non-commissioned officer in the Civil Air Patrol, according to a previous news release.

Kurer is survived by his wife and two children, one of whom was born the night before Kurer's death. A GoFundME page has been started for his family.
