MENASHA (WGBA) -- It is time for fishers to pack up the shanti's and leave Lake Winnebago. Sturgeon spearing is now over in Northeast Wisconsin, and fishers say conditions were not ideal this year.

"We've been doing this for 12 years and this year did not catch anything," said Steven Nett a fisher from Menasha.

Others we not able to go out due to weather.

"The DNR said we couldn't go out till three days ago because of the ice," said Brad Eley from St. Croix falls.

Eley, however, did find success. He caught his 2nd sturgeon ever on.

"We were just sitting their spearing and all of a sudden a fish came through the whole in 18 feet of water," Eley said. "We couldn't miss that fish and chucked that spear and the fight was on."

Eley was one of five who registered at Waverly Grill in Menasha. A warm January caused many to be concerned about whether the ice would be ready for spearing. The season was not as good compared to last year, but people like Eley still found success.

"We just can't way for next year," Eley said.
