APPLETON (NBC 26) -- The Appleton Fire Department's "Keep the Wreath Green" campaign is designed to promote fire safety and reduce the number of fires during the holiday season.

Appleton fire stations will display a wreath with green bulbs until New Year’s Day. For every fire that happens in Appleton, a green bulb will be replaced with a red one.

Each time a bulb is changed information will be shared by the department with details of what happened, along with some holiday fire safety tips.

Appleton Fire Department issued the following press release Wednesday morning:

Just a few hours after the Appleton Christmas Parade and the start of the Appleton Fire Department’s “Keep the Wreath Green” campaign, the first red bulb has been lit.

The Appleton Fire Department was called to a residence on Green Bay Ct just after 11 pm on Tuesday, November 26, 2019.

People reported that they were alerted by smoke detectors and discovered a fire coming from the dishwasher. The homeowner used a bucket of water to extinguish the fire, and then called the fire department.

An Appleton Fire Department crew responded to the residence to assist with smoke removal and check for any extension. Damage was limited to the dishwasher and a small portion of the countertop.

“This is a great example of why we encourage everyone to test and maintain their smoke detectors’, said Lieutenant Steven Unruh. “It is likely that, without the operable detectors, the fire would have had enough time to grow and cause significant damage and possibly injuries.”

Additionally, it was discovered that the appliance involved is part of a manufacturers recall.

“It’s an opportunity to remind everyone to register your products when you can and to also periodically check the Consumer Product Safety Commission at cpsc.gov for up to date recall information” said Lt. Unruh.
