NEW LONDON (NBC 26) — A firefighter has minor injuries and two families are displaced following a duplex fire Friday afternoon in New London.
The New London Fire Department responded to a call of a car on fire inside a garage around 4 p.m. Friday on the 1100 block of Robin Street, the department stated in a press release.
When crews arrived, they found "heavy smoke" rolling from the eaves of a side-by-side duplex. All occupants made it out safely and none were injured.
Fire crews started a second search to rescue pets, including a guinea pig, rabbit, hamster and two cats. The cats escaped on their own and all other pets were rescued and unharmed.
Damages were confined to the garages and attics, the New London Fire Department said.
One family of five and a family of two are displaced. The Red Cross is assisting both families.
A firefighter suffered minor injuries and was transported to an area hospital.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
