MENASHA (NBC 26) -- 53 people were evacuated after a fire at a nursing facility Thursday.
Neenah-Menasha Fire and Rescue says the fire broke out at the Oakridge Gardens Nursing Center in the 1700 block of Midway Rd.
"We would call the fire under control at this time. What the crews behind us are doing is putting out hot-spots, so the small fires from hidden locations we are unable to get to, and that are unsafe to get to due to the structure damage of the building. So we will be on scene for quite awhile putting out those hot spots and then keep pursuing the fire investigation," says Lt. Graham Steward with the Fox Crossing Fire Department.
According to the Fox Crossing Fire Department, when crews entered the building during the fire, they were met with heavy fire conditions in the attic and ceiling collapse of drywall. The fire department said elevated aerial water streams brought the fire under control.
Fire crews say 53 people were safely evacuated to a nearby church and then relocated to four different care facilities throughout the valley. One firefighter suffered a heat related injury and was treated at the scene.
No one else was hurt. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
