Fall colors serve as a reminder to get outside while you can

VILLAGE OF HOWARD, Wis (NBC 26) -- On Thursday, the weather was exactly what fall is supposed to feel like but we all know how fast it can change. Tonight, we share how some are squeezing out all the joy that fall has to offer well before the snow starts to fly.

Today lifelong friends Judy Gauthier and Kaye Aamonsen were taking in the colors at Pamprin Park in the Village of Howard. It's a nice change for the duo who have been meeting up once a week outdoors since about May when COVID-19 put a wrench in their traditional plans of going out to lunch.

"Well, we didn't like March and April too much, we didn't see each other. We chatted on the phone and then we just decided, okay, we need a plan 'B'," says Gauthier.

Plan 'B' was to get outside and enjoy lunch at a local park in the fresh air. And with weather like we experienced on Thursday, it's an easy sell.

"You can hear the wind rustling through the trees and some of the trees are starting to change," adds Aamonsen.

"I'm enjoying every minute of it. I'm trying to live in the minute and just appreciate the beauty," says Gauthier.

The good news is temperatures are supposed to be above normal for the next couple of days. And on top of that much of northeast Wisconsin is about 5 to 10 days away from peak colors.

But we all know what comes next, winter. And with COVID-19 still making its rounds, many are well aware that outings like this are getting more and more limited and valued.

"I know that we'll be out here even if we have to bring blankets. If there is some sun, even if it's in the '40s, we're going be here," says Aamonsen with a grin ear to ear.
