MANITOWOC COUNTY (NBC 26) — A driver and his passenger were seriously injured after crashing into a school early Monday morning, according to the Manitowoc County Sheriff.

The sheriff said in a statement that at about 1:23 a.m., deputies and EMS personnel responded to a crash at the intersection of Highways R and V in the village of Francis Creek.

According to the sheriff, 32-year-old Daniel Lepak from Cudahy was driving a 2018 Hyundai Elantra eastbound on Highway V. The sheriff said the vehicle failed to stop for the stop sign at the intersection with Highway R, proceeded through the intersection and collided with St. Anne School, 202 S. Packer Drive.

Lepak and his 21-year-old passenger, Isaiah T. Miramontes, were trapped in the vehicle. Crews needed to use the jaws of life to remove the two from the vehicle. Lepak was transported by ambulance to Aurora BayCare Medical Center in Green Bay for serious but non-life-threatening injuries. ThedaStar transported Miramontes to Aurora BayCare for life-threatening injuries.

The sheriff said alcohol and speed appear to be contributing factors in the crash.

The sheriff also said Lepak was arrested for operating while intoxicated - causing great bodily harm and reckless driving - causing great bodily harm. He was issued citations for unreasonable and imprudent speed, failure to stop at stop sign, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of open intoxicants and failure to wear a seatbelt.
