Now that the weather is finally warming up, many of you are probably eager to get on the water. Whether you're the captain of a boat or hitting the water in something a little smaller it's important to be aware of your surroundings.

Shannon Blay with Clear Water Outdoor rents kayaks and paddle boards in Milwaukee, Delafield and Lake Geneva.

"The most important thing when you're on the water is you're not the only one on the water," said Blay.

Blay said having a life jacket that fits, a float plan in place and understanding your equipment is key. Once you're ready, don't forget about those around you.

"We tell folks stay on the right just like you do when you drive," said Blay.

DNR Conservation Warden Jason Roberts reminds you to keep your head on a swivel.

"Motorboat operators, paddle sport folks, jet skis, wave runners, things of that nature, the concept of share the water is to make sure that everybody enjoys the water, but also that everybody's safe on the water," said Jason Roberts.

Roberts said to be smart about where you venture out.

"Typically inside the slow, no wake buoys so that you're not competing with larger motor boats that may not see you," said Roberts.

He said if possible hit the water with a buddy and if not, plan ahead.

"Letting people know where you're at at all times," said Roberts. "I have some safety equipment that can go over. Having your phone on you is very important."
