Detecting drugged driving in Wisconsin

BROWN COUNTY, Wis. (NBC 26) -- Recreational marijuana is now legal in both Michigan and Illinois. Medical marijuana is legal in Minnesota. In Wisconsin, the drug is still illegal.

Authorities are reminding people in Wisconsin that if someone buys marijuana in Michigan or Illinois, it cannot be legally brought into Wisconsin. That includes it still being in someone's system after using it.

Trooper John Jones with the Wisconsin State Patrol said any detectable amount, even a small bit, of marijuana in a driver's system is illegal. Jones tells us driving can be greatly impacted by drugs whether over-the-counter, prescribed, or illegal.

He also said it's important to call in if you suspect someone on the road could be under the influence.

"We're looking for a lot of different things. Obviously, you know, unable to maintain your safe lane, unsteady speeds, poor reaction to driving, turning, breaks, lights, any of that kind of stuff," said Jones.

He added that reporting a person who is driving like they may be under the influence can save that person's life and others out on the roads.
