A 51-year-old Fond du Lac called for help Saturday after the vehicle he was driving broke through the ice on Lake Winnebago, according to a news release from the Fond du Lac County Sheriff's Office.
Authorities got the call just before 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
The scene was about a half-mile north of Frazier Point at Lakeside Park.
The man was driving from west to east on Lake Winnebago and "was negotiating around multiple large cracks on the southern end of the lake," when his vehicle went through the ice, according to depuuties.
The man threw his phone onto the ice, and climbed out of his pick-up truck; his lower body had been submerged in water, deputies said.
He called 911 while walking to an ice shanty, then took shelter to block the wind until his rescue. Fond du Lac County deputies, Fond du Lac Fire / Rescue, and DNR wardens responded to the scene.
With the help of a Good Samaritan and his UTV, deputies reached the individual, and brought him back to shore.
The man was very cold, but was otherwise uninjured and was released at the scene, deputies said.
The truck is underwater and was marked by GPS; the owner has 30 days to remove the vehicle, deputies said.
