APPLETON (NBC26) -- A De Pere woman is achieving her goals after going through bariatric surgery. She ran the Fox Cities 5K over the weekend.
On October 2nd of last year Nicki Martin underwent a Roux-en-y gastric bypass.
Almost one year later she is down 80 pounds and ran her first ever 5K.
Nicki weighed 264 pounds before going in for her surgery at ThedaCare Regional Medical Center in Neenah.
She struggled with diabetes and acid reflux.
Now she is feeling good, off all medications and is inspired by her new outlook on life.
Nicki ran the Fox Cities 5K on Saturday with her dog.
She said it was hot and humid but it went really well.
"It was my first medal I've ever gotten in my entire life," said Martin. "You go through an adrenaline rush. I beat my regular time by 10 minutes. I thought maybe they had an error."
Nicki plans to run the Houdini 10K in Appleton on November 2nd.
She said she's going to progressively try races with more distance until she can run a marathon.
