DE PERE, Wis. (NBC 26) -- Moving to a new state can be tough. And when Rhonda Chandler's kids first started school in Northeast Wisconsin, she says it was a transition unlike any other.
"They came into an environment where they didn't see teachers and peers that really looked like them," Chandler said. "[It was] the name-calling or the ugly comments that were said. And then comments about their hairstyles. If I changed my daughter's hairstyle, it was comments about her hairstyle."
So in 2020, Chandler found a solution by creating'Lovin' The Skin I'm In,' a nonprofit that brings local girls of color together in De Pere.
"We empower and uplift them and provide access and exposure to opportunities that will develop their talents, gifts and leadership skills," Chandler said.
This month, Chandler's organization is recognized by the ColorBold Business Association, which highlights and works with entrepreneurs of color in the Northeast region.
"I was just really impressed with the work that she was doing and the fact that she was just racing to the mission of elevating girls of color to make them feel more welcomed," UW-Extension Community Development Educator Mia Ljung said.
And Chandler says that hard work is paying off for the startup's members.
"They are comfortable with wearing their natural hair or they feel like they have someone that understands what they're going through," Chandler said. "They have a support system."
Ljung, who also works with ColorBold, says the community impact of 'Lovin The Skin I'm In' goes beyond a single group of girls.
"The more you engage with organizations and businesses that may look different than you, you actually expand your own world view and you will actually be more competent, honestly, Ljungsaid. "This has become a 21st Century skill."
At its peak, Chandler says nearly 19 members from all around Northeast Wisconsin have joined in on meetings with 'Lovin The Skin I'm In.'
"We haven't begun to reach the girls that are out there," Chandler said. "But I was excited to see the 19. But I know there are way more."
Those are more members helping each other feel at home.
'Lovin The Skin I'm In' offers a number of programs for the community. Chandler hosts a meeting every month at Life Church in De Pere. The next one is scheduled for June.
The organization is planning a summer day-camp for girls of color aged 7 to 14. They are also holding a gardening event.
